A week ago I was able to write a poem or rather the semblance of it, a vehement expression of sentiments of love and aspirant desire. The foreground is one of my formative years at Port Sheptone High School, in the South Coast, where i was an inebriated youth with an infatuation for English literature and the general use of words. Beyond being an adept reader lay a latent desire to be eloquent and to be commended for it.
Rather than hark relentlessly at memories past I chose to indulge in a momentary retrospect and then begin with my ode to ' present' beatitudes.
My Foremost linguistic mentor was Abulele Mafuya a towering, myopia suffering, disheveled looking brother with inclinations towards; neo-soul , hip-hop, poetry, mixit-ciphers, performing arts and connoisseur of the female form. One of my earliest encounters with his poetic prowess was on a text written to his then companion, a certain Ms. Babongile Zwane. I assigned his text to memory and it became an 'Ace' in the arsenal of my 'romantic repertoire' throughout my adolescent years.
: "The thought of kissing you my love, fills my body with effervescent chills which permeate my spine with the incessant tingles of loves anemones that inflame within me an insatiable desire to... ''
-Sheppie ''03/04
(The rest is sealed in the vault of my memory capsule and the 'sands of time' )
In the same vein, a poem I consider the 'magnum opus' of my High School career stems from a quote by Jane Austin which i was shown by Abulele Mafuya.
“Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste it's fragrance on the desert air.”
― Jane Austen
The poem which found shape from that quote I named "Memento" which is souvenir of remembrance.
MEMENTO - Menzi Bhengu
'Morn, the beauteous primordial primrose
blooms under the azure sky.
An anomaly amongst budding
buddleia bereft of any imperfections.
Its petals accentuate its purity
like the hair of a woman accentuates
the quintessence of her beauty.
It wastes its sweetness in the wilderness unseen
a picturesque sight no artist can ever envisage
a transcendental immaculateness exemplified.
Its life is ephemeral; like a quasar its shines
brightly before disappearing.
A sight few ever see, a sight never to be replicated,
a sight too splendid for words.'
In acknowledge of that poem the '05Year Book of Sheppie High etched my name in its back pages.
These days I write quips and quotes and get letters published in Destiny Man.
Alas, it never too late to reach ones full potential soo I shall solider on!
