Eastern Westerns: They're The Shit.

This film inspired this post...I was watching Stephen Chow's masterpiece earlier today and it got me thinking, "You know. Why is it that all these asian Western-style movies are so good?"...that might just be because I have excellent taste in movies and haven't even considered watching a bad one...or it might be that there's something about that sort of story that I find appealing...whatever it is, might as well share some of my favorites, as well as one that I am highly anticipating...

Now, Kung Fu Hustle isn't technically within the Western category...it's really more of an Action-Comedy, combining a tremendous amount of martial arts with several parodies from other films (both Chinese and American)...however, it contains several elements common in Westerns, including Chow himself playing the Young Gun, the landlady and her peeping-tom husband, the three masters in Pig Sty Alley, and the Axe Gang terrorizing its impoverished residents...they almost tossed in this sucker, but they needed to leave things open for Chow to become The Chosen One in the end...this is the movie that made me want to get into the motion picture business...if you haven't already, watched it...

:

If you've spent any time at all attempting to expand your cranial film database, then you've probably come across this classic...if you haven't, drop whatever you're doing on the ground...I don't care how fragile it is, just drop it and start running to the nearest Mr Video...you can pick up the pieces later...you need to watch this...

Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is one of those movies that they'll make you watch (or at least they should) if you ever take a film appreciation course...it's been an inspiration in many many movies and TV shows, including The Magnificent Seven, The Guns of the Navarone, Ocean's Eleven, The Dirty Dozen, Star Wars, Samurai 7, Firefly, The Three Amigos, Seven Swords, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and probably Kung Fu Hustle as well..
